This may be a bit off topic but perhaps someone in the icecast community has a gem of knowledge that could help me.

The company I work for has a subscription based internet radio channel for financial information. Our employees are the broadcasters but the system that they use to broadcast is a proprietary system that is hosted for us. It provides our contributors with a number to call and a passcode.. After they punch in their code there's a BEEP which means they're LIVE, they give their broadcast and hang up when they're done.

This system handles the almost-live (10-20sec) streaming and then archives the files.

We are looking to reimplement and improve this system ourselves using OSS. It looks like we can use Icecast for streaming the audio but how do I reproduce this phone-based broadcasting system with OSS?

Does anyone know where to start?

Asterisk? http://www.asterisk.org/

I saw some instructions on how to make it stream inbound phone calls the other day. Should be possible to make it work for what you want.

Alright cool. Asterisk seems very powerful and I've already got a prototype up and running.. The issue I face now is to allow the end-user to customize which contributors / categories they listen to... So custom streams that are segments of the main line? What do you think would be the best way to handle this type of thing?

Is this something that has been approached before?

What makes it so tough is that I want this to be as close to Live as possible.. So it has to be streamed from the source.. not just filed away as an mp3. Am I going towards multiple sources and complicated relay schemes?
