How much bandwidth is there to the machine you want to use icecast on? |

now that is a good question,
I have been told that I cant use it on my web server. So I was going to put icecast on my pc & stream it through there, & link it from the website
I really dont know much about the Bandwith end of thing's.
Do you think it is possible to set up?
Thanks for your help. |

It is totally possible to setup icecast, however, you need to know if there is any point.
I'm guessing marine radio isn't massively high quality, and is in mono, so you could encode it, for examples sake, in ogg at a nominal rate of 32kbps.
For every concurrent listener you have, you will need 32kbps of upstream bandwidth.
So say you have 512kbps upstream.
Theoretically that gives you 512 / 32 = 16 listeners, probably more like 12 in practice.
So before you do anything else you need to know how much bandwidth you have...
Most people buy space on a dedicated stream hoster and connect a source client up to that.
p.s. please note we're talking about upstream traffic bandwidth. If you are on a home user connection downstream is usually double the upstream bandwidth, and home connections are contended, so there's no guarantee you'll even get the stated rate. |
