Hello there!

I have a big problem... I cannot install ices0.4 - I always get the error:

"configure: error: Could not find a usable libshout"

I've installied libshout and libshout-devel via rpm packages under SuSE 9.3

here what the RPM reports say:

h700028:~/bin/ices-0.4 # rpm -ql libshout
/usr/lib/libshout.so.3
/usr/lib/libshout.so.3.1.0
/usr/share/doc/packages/libshout
/usr/share/doc/packages/libshout/COPYING
/usr/share/doc/packages/libshout/README
/usr/share/doc/packages/libshout/example.c
/usr/share/doc/packages/libshout/libshout.xml
/usr/share/doc/packages/libshout/nonblocking.c
/usr/share/doc/packages/libshout/spec-html.xsl

and

h700028:~/bin/ices-0.4 # rpm -ql libshout-devel
/usr/include/shout
/usr/include/shout/shout.h
/usr/lib/libshout.a
/usr/lib/libshout.la
/usr/lib/libshout.so
/usr/lib/pkgconfig/shout.pc
/usr/share/aclocal/shout.m4

PLEASE help me soon! Thanks a lot!

check the config.log file for that error message, see what it is actually failing on. From your post, it should find the header files but it may be that the linker is failing because ldconfig hasn't been run.

Thanks for your Reply KarlH!

These are the important lines in config.log:

configure:20721: checking for pkg-config
configure:20752: result: no
configure:20774: checking for shout-config
configure:20805: result: no
configure:21103: error: Could not find a usable libshout

And yes, I did run ldconfig before running ./configure Sad

Dear KarlH!

That's really funny and weird. After a few hours of sleep I just tried to ./configure again just for fun and now it worked - though I didn't change anything after last try... Very funny, but it works now.

Thanks a lot for your help.

again the config.log will give the exact reason for failure, but as an initial guess I suspect the lib64 reference is the key. Maybe your pkgconfig is not setup to search that path

thanks for your reply karl, i hope it's ok to post my config.log... how or where do i fix the pkgconfig? i post the /usr/lib64/pkgconfig/shout.pc, not sure if this is what you were meaning. i hope this will help you to help me Neutral

i have the same software running on another server, and it's running smooth. its a pentium 3 server, so i guess, the problem is really somewhere to find in that lib64 thing...

i iadditionally installer gcc c++ to remove some errors in config.log... but the main problem still exists... i cannot ./configure ices

i did a

Code:

PKG_CONFIG_PATH=/usr/lib64/pkgconfig
export PKG_CONFIG_PATH

but still not working... anyone an idea where else to look?

no, it's not ok to post the whole config.log here. especially when the failure part is the the pkg-config or shout-config, neither of which is found. The package for libshout shows shout-config is not in there, so this part is the crucual

configure:20650: checking for pkg-config
configure:20681: result: no

so determine why pkg-config is not being found, it's probably a missing path setting or maybe you don't have it installed.
