Probably a winamp bug.
If your php script has a ".php" extension, winamp won't use the right plugin, and it'll attempt to decode your ogg vorbis stream as mp3 - which obviously doesn't w ... |

Not using icecast.
Icecast only does HTTP streaming. Other protocols tend to have less client support for saving them (but usually it's still very easy to do so) |

Currently the HTTP authentication realm in icecast is hard-coded to "Icecast2 Server".
It's not configurable. Sorry about that.

It's entirely possible that htpasswd's hashing is not the same as icecast's - I certainly never used any command line tools to edit or create icecast htpasswd files.
Sorry about that.

Your question still doesn't make sense.
Icecast is a SERVER. Flash video is a FORMAT. These are not the same things.
(also, last I checked, things like youtube just did http file serving, not tr ... |

Difficult question to answer!
Icecast is a server. Flash video is a format. There are no obvious points of commonality on which to compare them.

Icecast only officially supports free formats (such as Ogg Vorbis, and Theora).
Many other formats work through a generic passthrough mechanism - icecast will just send data on from a source clien ... |

It's really very simple:
The client sends an HTTP request for the stream.
The server responds, over the same socket, with the actual stream data.
That's all! There's nothing else at all.

For a listening client, icecast uses pure HTTP.
So, you don't need an icecast-specific protocol document. You just need to implement HTTP, then feed the body of the response to your mp3 decoder.

2.0.0 is extremely old. Many, many bugs have been fixed since then, as well as a number of features being added.
Looking at fixing bugs in 2.0.0 is rather silly; you should just upgrade to somethin ... |

We don't intend to remove existing features.
As before, we won't officially provide support for non-free codecs - if they work, fine. That's never been any different.

Icecast is free software - you can certainly use it without having to pay anything.
Note that if you want to support non-free codecs, such as mp3, you'll need to pay for those. However, for streami ... |

Answered this in IRC; for the record: on unix, to use ports < 1024, you must run a program as root.
The user was presumably running shoutcast as root, but not icecast.
