I have been reading and reading here and still can not get a straight simple answer on how to set this up. I tried to post in the FAQ area, but it would not let me, so here I am, possibly posting in the wrong place.
I am a very bright computer literate person and a disc jockey in the real world. I've built tons of websites, broadcast tons of audio, but this software and process is NOT intuitive for me at all.
I need a step by step guide to start up. Meaning tell me where to click in the software and what information to type in or select, etc. I have never felt so inept in my life.
I realize this sw is free, but maybe this is a case of getting what I pay for?
Hard to believe, since I've seen so many glowing reports about icecast. Just want to try it for myself.
I've tried the unofficial guides, read the FAQ pages and sorted through the icecast docs. Nothing seems plain and simple, its all greek to me. Help, please? |

The first thing you need to do is specify what you understand and what you are trying to achieve. Vague questions like you've asked are not going to get answered because nobody knows at what point you are at. You have not stated the platform, whether you are going to host icecast yourself or use a provider, whether the confusion down to the source client or maybe an issue with the format of choice.
From the word 'click' we could assume you are talking about a windows installation of icecast. The win32 install of icecast is rather trivial, but you haven't said if that is the problem or not.

I am using Windows platform (Vista) I have downloaded icecast software and SAM 3. I can open icecast and from there have no clue as to how to set it up. I am intending on streaming voice and audio from my laptop.
I am at such a beginner place that I do not know what it is you need to know to help me get started. |

In general, the only settings that are needed is for listing on the directory. By default it doesn't try to list the streams unless you specify the hostname and uncomment the <directory> tag group in the xml configuration. Listing on the directory is not required.
To verify whether the icecast server is running, use your browser, http://address:8000/, address can be an IP or DNS name. You'll get a fairly blank page until you start the source client streaming (sam 3 in this case). You'll want sam to record from the soundcard.

Karl, I sincerely thank you for trying to help, but that doesn't help a bit. I'm going to switch to something that I'll probably have to pay for but is more intuitive.
Again, thanks. |
