| Hi guys, been researching this for a while now and came to the conclusion that it is just easier to ask the experts. I want to setup a directory of mp3's on my server with a playlist that I create daily. I want the end user to be able to stream the songs off the playlist as if it is a regular radio station only difference is I wont use my home computer to send the stream to the icecast server. Does that make sense? Will it work with icecast or should I look at another solution? |

an app like ezstream or ices 0.4 will read your mp3 files and stream them to icecast without problem. They both can be on the same machine.

I'm confused - do you want individual end users to start their own streams of the one playlist or to simply connect to the one stream in progress that was started on schedule? Do you want them to be able to jump around in the playlist? If the latter, then Ices is not needed at all, just Icecast with the collection of MP3's under the webroot and the playlist in a M3U, RAM or SMIL format.

| THanks guys I think that answers my questions. What i'm doing is setting up a system where people can vote for songs by artists. We then take those votes daily and compile them into a playlist for the next day. I don't want them to be able to jump around and play whatever they want I want it to be a set stream like a normal radio station, just a slightly more automated one that doesn't require me to stream the music from my home computer. |

Ok guys, I got icecast and ices 0.4 compiled, configured, and installed. I uploaded a couple mp3's to the server in the proper directory and created a file called playlist.m3u with the file info. I can now go to http://myipaddress:8000/playlist.m3u and listen to the files. I would like it to stream them like a radio station though if possible. What I mean is when someone goes to http://myipaddress:8000/ it should play the songs as they are in progress like tuning into a radio station. What would I need to change in order to do that?
Thanks for the help guys i'm completely new to internet radio, but have to get this going for a large scale project my company is working on. |

Broadcast the radio station? I don't know if there is anyhting closer? |

| well right now they request the playlist in m3u format which queues everything in winamp, but they are able to skip between songs. Is there a way to make it more linear so they can't jump around. So it is an actual broadcast as if I was broadcasting from my home pc? |

Yes you did, and i'm using ices as stated above. I'm just asking how I need to configure it to make it work the way I wanted is all. I have it working as a jukebox of sorts, now I would like help if possible to have it stream. If you can just point me toward some docs on the subject or something that would work.

ok guys, i've been reading and figuring this out. I think I have a problem with my mount points or something simple. Can you please take a look at my config files?
The mp3 files we are streaming are stored at /home/postelem/public_html/radio

I guess you didn't want to go into the details of what it was doing, you know log messages have actually been known to be useful.

| I checked the logs, but the documentation for icecast is lacking to put it mildly. As I said, I had shoutcast setup and running a live stream as I intended in about an hour. |

Maybe you're right, maybe icecast will always have no chance in your situation. Obviously icecast and ices is designed to be show no logging information when you specifically use them and the limited information you provided is of course our fault. Thank you for your feedback  |
