put a link to a playlist, eg m3u or pls and have the playlist contain the actual stream url. icecast can even generate an m3u for you eg
http://host:port/mountpoint.m3u

the mountpoint is whatever you use to identify a stream. If there are 100 streams on your icecast, how else would you know which one to reference.

You say the stream is to be made public (some source clients use the term advertise) and you tell icecast which directories to use.

Can I have a clean url? Meaning.... I would like users to open my domain:port# in their prefered client and it make a connection. For example I would like to open http://voice.wvfs.fsu.edu:8000 and it make a connection and play; Opposed to what I have now which is http://voice.wvfs.fsu.edu:8000/stream.m3u Basically I want to avoid having a FileName.Ext appended to my port #

WANT: http://voice.wvfs.fsu.edu:8000
NOT WANT: http://voice.wvfs.fsu.edu:8000/stream.m3u

you can do, just stream on the / mountpoint, just don't forget that you may have an alias of / to /status.xsl which would need removing.
