Hello, my radio station is looking to host a streaming server from two more sources (we currently have an icecast server using a single darkice source that splits input from the soundcard into two bitrates. I've been trying to find a way to use one source client that can handle input from multiple physical sources. Does anyone know of a client or maintainable method that can keep the encoding process for all three sources in one box?

On another note, the prior technician (who is now gone) claimed that the darkice source and the icecast server had to be kept in two separate boxes to prevent networking complications. This seemed odd to me, because I know of other stations that have ONE server that encodes and streams their audio. Does anyone know of any real reason to keep the two unix services on separate IPs / in separate boxes?

If you want to encode several streams from the same input the most clients will do that, but if you want to mix several inputs before encoding then you could look into JACK

The only way a source client would have trouble talking to icecast on the same box is if it has some dependency on the network (which it shouldn't) eg name lookup or some weird routing misconfiguration.

Thanks I'll look into setting up a JACK audio server. I'm surprised JACK isn't mentioned anywhere on the icecast site.
