I am trying to get a FM radio station to stream using Icecast and Ices but I have two issues, one of which I think I have gotten around and the other is a showstopper. Both of these issues may be related.
The "gotten around" issue is that ices doesn't work with the alsa setup on my audio server computer.
/proc/asound/card0/pcm0c/info shows this:
card: 0
device: 0
subdevice: 0
stream: CAPTURE
id: STAC92xx Analog
name: STAC92xx Analog
subname: subdevice #0
class: 0
subclass: 0
subdevices_count: 2
subdevices_avail: 2
arecord -l shows this:
**** List of CAPTURE Hardware Devices ****
card 0: Intel [HDA Intel], device 0: STAC92xx Analog [STAC92xx Analog]
Subdevices: 2/2
Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
Subdevice #1: subdevice #1
It's my understanding that this device should be specified as hw:0,0 (which is the default in the example alsa configuration file.
However, when I do a "service ices start" with this setup, I get this error message:
EROR input-alsa/alsa_open_module Failed to open audio device hw:0,0: No such file or directory
My "solution" to this was to try using the oss configuration and that starts and appears to work.

[2010-01-18 14:12:00] INFO stream/ices_instance_stream Connected to server: 192.168.0.196:8000/example1.ogg
However, when I connect to the server to listen to the stream I hear nothing but absolute silence. It's streaming and my client is downloading it but there is no sound to be heard.
Hence the second part of my inquiry, which I will post as a different message here because it's a somewhat different issue. |

try using default instead of hw:0,0. If you are getting silence then the capture settings on the mixer will be not set as you want.

"default" works. Thanks!
Now I seem to have a choice of oss or alsa and I don't know a great deal about either: is there any advantage to one or the other? |
