Hi all.

I have to install an icecast system for long-term streaming. I wanted to know what hardware you'd suggest for this purpose.
It should be a machine running a Linux system with the icecast server software and an icecast client. The audio source is external so it needs to have a decent soundcard as well.

Are there any system preferences you could recommend?
What are the minimum CPU/memory requirements for streaming/encoding?
Which Linux distribution would you recommend?

My budget is limited to 100-200€ but I could request more money if necessary. Bandwidth is almost unlimited, noise level and power consumption are also no big deal.
Remote maintainability would be great.

Hi,

Icecast by itself is not a memory hog.

For long term streaming, you should invest in very good hardware, not the cheapest possible one.

All modern server hardware is great for icecast, so this should never be the main problem.

All major distributions (Opensuse, Fedora, Debian...) have a packaged icecast bundled. So, once again, personals tastes are the rule.
For my own company use, all of our servers are Fedora 12, and most client systems are opensuse...

For such a small budget, don't dream, you cannot find good brand new server hardware. In France, you can buy new entry level servers for as low as 299 €.
For long term service, prefer new hardware instead of second hand.

Thanks alot, I'd already supposed the budget wouldn't be enough for a decent machine...
