The mountpoint extension doesn't affect icecast but some players use the extension to determine which codec to use for the decoding. If ogg data is sent to a player on a mountpoint without a .ogg extension then they could use the wrong codec and get stuck expecting mp3 data. Icecast sends the mime type that comes from the source client/relay but that is often ignored.
