Can't Get Live Sound

I've gotten Icecast2 & Ices2 working from playlists on my Debian 3.1 system, but I can't get it to pull sound from alsa or /dev/dsp.

I've got alsa loaded, but it borks when I try to run ices2 with the alsa module (logs say it can't initialize the alsa device).

Using the oss module does not crash, but doesn't pick up any sound either.

I've used aumix to activate the "capture" level, but still get nothing.

Anybody have any suggestions?
