Icecast Streaming Media Server

Hi,

I have just installed and set up Icecast without a hitch. I recorded a few audio files to run between music on my test site, however, the audio sounds like a Dalek when played on a client machine. I just recorded my voice using Windows audio recorder, saved as .wav is there a particular file format I should be saving as and can anyone suggest a better tool for recording speech to add to the site?
