You won't need the option for linux, the defaults tend to be far better configured. The question of how far away the listener is depends on the ping time and I suppose your ping time would be on the high side but if you are ok then it may not be that. Don't forget some may be using wireless or misconfigured or saturated links so you may have limited options.
