Icecast Streaming Media Server

Hi all, I'm using Icecast and LiveIce to stream aviation scanner audio via the line-in input on my sound card.

The scanner volumne knob is cranked up as high as it will go, I've got the recording level of my soundcard maxxed out at 100% using alsamixer, and I've also got the volume on my listening client (another computer) cranked, but I can barely hear the stream.

All other audio on my listening client is booming, and I've tried several other client computers, and the stream is quiet on all of them.

Any suggestions on how to raise the volume?

I am using a shielded cable to feed the scanner to the audio card. Is that the problem?

For anyone else experiencing this problem...

1. Don't use a shielded cable unless you absolutely have to.
2. Use the shortest unshielded cable possible. I'm using 1 foot.
3. Properly set your recording levels. Here's how to do that.

- Hook up everything
- Use your software mixer to set your recording level low enough that you don't pick up anything but your signal. Liveice was showing :## as a stereo input source with my scanner turned off.
- Once you show no "noise" on your input channel, turn on your audio source. In my case a scanner.
- Adjust the volume on the audio device to be as loud as possible without clipping.

Viola! Clear audio and dead silence between hits on the scanner.
