Not sure if this has been posted on the forums yet,
someone else pointed this out on the icecast-dev mailling list,
and to my surprise i found this in a log file
[2006-06-19 18:55:41] EROR yp/send_to_yp YP add on http://dir.xiph.org/cgi-bin/yp-cgi failed: We only accept Ogg stream listings
I have yet to read anywhere on when and why this occured.
Sure the yp is free yada yada, but beyond that it is well maintained.
Expemting other stream formats serves as much purpose as.....
well..... NOTHING!
Can someone clarify xiph's position in the matter? |

Ralph emailed the list announcing this change: http://lists.xiph.org/pipermail/icecast/2006-June/010518.html
Feel free to ask me if you have further questions (though I much prefer email to using the forum) on this.
Essentially, supporting these non-free formats was a) overloading our server, and b) is not what xiph exists for.

hmm for some reason my email got removed from the list,
anyhoot forums are good for these kinds of issues.
Since xiph is community driven i believe the community should have a
say so on whether or not those formats should be removed, dont you?.
Honestly if the icecast2 server supports those formats, then so should the yp.
If it is more server load you require, reach out to the community and ask,
someone will donate a cluster node, ahem!!
Providing links to other formats in the yp does the following,
A) Gives listeners options as to what sounds better in audio quality
B) Lets people of interest compare ogg to other formats.
Yanking away the competition reminds me of this story that goes something like this.
Little brother gets new ball, plays with older brother and looses, little brother
takes ball away from older brother.
p.s. As always this is IMHO doesnt mean
im right or wrong. |
