Icecast Streaming Media Server

Okay I'm not making much headway here with a successful install of icecast2, that works fine. It's the streamer that I have a problem with since there are few for a win32 install of icecast. I have tried the ezstreamer and it is not working , if it does work the instructions for it is somewhere between here and mars. I guess the best question would be how do you start ezstreamer since the shortcut does not install when you install it and the main folder exe file just does nothing as in a black dos box on off about that fast ! What streamer is going to work with win32 ?

many who use win32 for a source client use something like oddcast DSP or some other win32 specific app.

I have a working server now with the DSP v3 streamer and I show that it is public.

My problem for the moment is understanding how to get the music files into a folder named correctly and mounted. All my files are mp3's and as I understand it you are to make a folder containing the mp3's and mount this file name of the folder into *where* ? I do not have ezstream installed since it never worked for me.

If you wanted to serve different genres of content would you make a folder for each and then just change the mount point each time you wanted the server to serve these files. I think this would be like just letting winamp add a dir each time using shoutcast server.

dont know where to start dude; since am also new and unaware if your apps.

BUT

1. icecast server
2. source client eg winamp
3. DSP plugins/encoder for winamp

other setups are similar BUT

Whatever u play in the source client will be encoded and sent to the server, where the stream is passed on to the listeners.

It doesnt matter what folders you put the mp3s in if you generate a playlist eg *.m3u winamp will play the list.

I havent heard of the source limits but u can send as many sources to the server as your comp can handle, each to different mount points, or just different metadata to get your music categories

Thank's I have all that installed and actually have a working server according to all the GUI's, I know this also because I am on a second machine accessing across the net not the localhost! My winamp player shows connection to the icecast2 server but does not show the music list that is playing on the other winamp machine serving, it just shows my http address on the marquee string by. It shows the mount as stream.ogg, this is where the problem is so how do I point the server to the music location. I thought winamp was supposed to stream everything added in the directory list.

You are confusing a series of filenames in a playlist with server streaming. When you play a server stream in a player then it doesn't have a big playlist of entries, it just has the url of the stream, and plays whatever is sent by the server. The stream could contain metadata that identifies the stream data but that has to be provided by the source client and handled by the player.

I understand what you are saying and it makes sense now looking at the url streaming by in the player. I still don't get any sound from the stream . If I could figure out what to change or input to the config file for mount then this would probably fix that. I have all the documentts printed out but since most pertain to the linux install it gets a little confusing. Am I supposed to change the mount from /example-ogg to something else and if so where should the folder with the mp3s reside.

We know very little about what you want out of this setup. If it's to make an ogg stream from winamp dsp which is reencoding from mp3 files then say so. You say there's no sound but does that mean it's silence or does that mean no data is being sent.

Use of the winamp plugin app should really be directed at the oddcast forums not at the forum for the icecast server, but you should see/hear the winamp source client playing content while it's connected to icecast if not then icecast will probably drop the connection and will say so in the log file.

Thank's for bringing up that question because I had intended to ask would the plugin automatically encode an mp3 to ogg output ?

What I mean by no sound is no audio from the player, it shows the url that the player is tuned to which is of course my server. The admin web page is accessible and shows there is a stream connected to this player I am using on my test machine. The source player has a playlist loaded and is playing thru the streamer, I just don't get any audio when I connect using another machine across the web.

I'll keep trying because it is so close I can't give up and I'll try the oddcast forums.

i think you need to change the mount to .mp3, it may or may not confuse you player lol

in any case this is not wimpy picking an mp3 from a folder and playing it.....

the server is still the distribution point, the source client has to send it all the info eg, stream (ogg/mp3), metadata etc.

you still need some "other" storage to show song history and list etc. standard setup for icecast only list the current song.

Shoutcast stores some data on their server

Thanks Chas, your 101 was right, I went into conf for dsp and changed to AAC and it is kicking arse !
