Icecast Streaming Media Server

hi there,

This is Lan from Japan.

We are planning on building a community Internet radio station and is wondering if we can use the icecast software and whether it will be free or not.
The Internet based radio station is a non-profit community radio station but we will need to generate the basic maintenance costs from the local stores commercials and the estimate gross revenue will be around 0~500USD annual.

In this case, is the software still free?
If not, how much do we need to pay?

Icecast is free software - you can certainly use it without having to pay anything.

Note that if you want to support non-free codecs, such as mp3, you'll need to pay for those. However, for streaming free codecs (e.g. Ogg Vorbis), it's entirely free.

The other thing you MAY need to pay for is copyright licensing for material that you're streaming - for instance, music. The licensing for that stuff varies widely across the world, and is often cheap for community-radio sort of setups, but I know nothing about Japanese copyright law.
