Icecast Streaming Media Server

I have icecast and ices (0.4) running on a machine here that has a local fallback and streams MP3 files from a remote server.

Everything works perfectly save for one thing. I'll describe the scenario as best as I can.

Local mp3 client (mplayer, xmms, etc) connects to the local icecast server and begins to stream.

Connection interruption (network congestion, ISP trouble, etc) results in the stream switching to the local fallback stream.

However, every time this switch occurs some cache on the mp3 client (mplayer for example) is "lost". That is, the amount of buffer you have before you reach 0 cache reduces some.

After a few switches between the remote mp3 server and fallback you end up with 0 cache being utilized on the mp3 client and the resulting sound playback becomes very poor and "choppy".

What I see happening is when the switch to fallback is made a certain % of cache is just lost. If you are at 50% cache and it switches to fallback it'll drop a few % down to say 47%. When it switches back over to the remote stream the cache will not rebuild back up to 50% and thus after a few switches you are into a 0 cache state and playback becomes poor again.

This happens with any mp3 client you use so I'm inclined to believe it's not on the mp3 client side.

burst is enabled and the queue size is pretty large as well. The OS is DSL 3.0

Any ideas on how to "fix" this?
