|

Ok, I am trying to set up a stream of a NOAA weather radio station from my computer. I have set up Icecast, and it seems to be working. I have also set up DarkIce as the streamer, and my OS is Fedora 6.
My computer has an ALSA compliant sound card in it, and I am feeding the NOAA broadcast into the line-in jack on the sound card. This is the current input section of my darkice.cfg
| Code: |
# this section describes the audio input that will be streamed
[input]
device = hw:0,0 # OSS DSP soundcard device for the audio input
sampleRate = 44100 # sample rate in Hz. try 11025, 22050 or 44100
bitsPerSample = 16 # bits per sample. try 16
channel = 2 # channels. 1 = mono, 2 = stereo
|
This setup gives me a good, but silent stream.
I am not sure if device is correct for the input jack of my soundcard. When I plug in the NOAA stream, I can hear it on my computer speakers. In ALSAMIXER, it appears to be the LINE bar in the playback section controls the volume of the feed, and none of the bars in the Capture section seem to affect the volume of the feed. Im pretty new to ALSAmixer.
Also, what role does ALSAMIXER play in determining what source the soundcard sends?
Thanks,
C. Alan |

There is no univerversal way of getting this to work as many cards operate differently. Many need the Capture/record set on the particular input (or Mix) and on the Capture slider.

I use gnome-alsamixer to control my record channels.
It is an old rpm (FC3) but works well with FC6. At least it is easier to
operate because of its graphics window.

A think you have to enable the rec box in the Mic channel and in the capture.
The capture volume should affect only the volume of the recording, not the sound you hear through the speakers (these are controlled by the Mic volume).

Thanks for the rpm. That is a little easier to use than alsamixer. I did finally figure out where the input was, using arecord, and making sample wave files.
So my stream is up and running. Check it out at:

The sound quality leaves a lot to be desired. The radio I am using is a pretty nice Radio Shack super radio. The signal is pretty good considering the station is only 100 watts, and over 50 miles away. I am using about 12 feet of cable to get the radio far enough away from computer to minimize the interference. I think an external antenna will be necessary to get a clean signal.
Does anyone have any suggestions for cleaning up the signal before streaming? It is being generated by a Lame encoder using Darkice. The encoding rate is 44100, and it is going to 1 channel.
Thanks for all your help!

Hi, Alan
I am glad to hear that you suceeded!
Could you post the version of the rpms that you are actually
using, so another person could follow your steps?
Did you have to compile anything from source?
I am trying to create a working set of rpms related to icecast,
so it would be easier to set up a system. Yesterdeay, I fixed
ices from extras, which had initialization problems.
I also created two versions of liveice and xmms-liveice, but did not test them. The software is kind of old (2000). If someone could test them, I would like to hear the result.
Thanks,
/Paulo Roma. |
