OK !! I read several different instruction sheets and none seem to answer a few of my questions.

Here they are please help

1. I have one computer which I use to play music...can it also act as the server?

2. Where do I install the icecast server? on another machine? Do i NEED A STATIC ip ADDRESS?

3. Can I set up the icecast server on my virtual server..If yes how do I do it?

This is what I have
machine with win xp / audigy sound card / sam broadcaster / Cable internet connection / dynamic IP address/ virtual server / web hosting account

This is what I need to do
Provide an .OGG stream ...live from my machine to the distribution platform

Please Help !! I need to figure this out as soon as possible....Do I have to setup another machine as a server?

Thanks in advance

1. yes
2. Like any server application a dynamic IP is ok until it changes, at which point any connections need to be re-established and the new IP needs to be known about. You should be able to see why static IPs are often preferred for servers.

3. A virtual server can be ok, but the odd one or two have been known to have performance problems because of bugs in the virtual server itself. The actual setting up is no different than a real server.

The thing that is unclear, is whether you intend to run a potentially high bandwidth server like icecast on a home connection because home connections do not have much upload bandwidth.

That's fine, but you will be only running a source client locally, icecast will be running on the remote machine (ie the machine where listeners connect to).

Firstly Thank you Karl..for your responses...

So to summarize things up

My local machine here should be running Sam Broadcaster
I should install the server client or the relay client on my web hosting server

Am I on the right track? If this is the way to go ...I will do the needful and update you on the progress..

Thanks a ton for your time

The general setup is source client on local machine, feeding a stream to an icecast server remotely (somewhere with enough bandwidth for all listeners). You could have different setups including a relay but that doesn't sound like what you want.
