Icecast Streaming Media Server

I've set up icecast and ezstream without too much issue and I've started work on a php-based frontend I can use away from my computer but I have some questions regarding ezstream in particular. As it stands I can get ezstream to stream directly from am mp3 file and I can keep feeding that file data or I can use a playlist. Currently I have it just looping a playlist.

From what I understand ezstream loads the entire playlist file (in individual mp3 in the case of a straight mp3 file) into memory on startup? As an example I've started ezstream with a 10-track playlist, cat >> an 11th track and ezstream won't actually play that track until it runs the whole playlist (tracks 1-10) then re-loads the playlist and plays 1-10 then finally plays track 11.

I'm trying to figure out a good way of getting enough feedback from ezstream or the mp3 decoder about the position in the song to rewrite the playlist in time to get it to load the song I want, or somehow modifying ezstream's behaviour as to get it to load the playlist on every track change. Ideally I'd like to be able to get information from the decoder about how far along a track it is and be able to update tracks that way, but for right now I figure I'll take whatever I can get.

In addition, if this a good place to ask questions about ezstream or is there another forum or mailing list somewhere that might be a better venue? Thanks to anyone who might be able to answer anything here ;D

Alright so I've managed to hack my way to the point where most of my problems are solved...

I spent some time looking though ezstream.c and cleaned it up for my purposes. In addition, I changed the playlist streaming function to reload the playlist and start from the beginning every time. I also added a directive in the configuration file for a command to run at the end of every song.

Currently in my configuration this directive points to a php script I've written that pulls a random song from a MySQL table (really though this could be written using any language you want so long as it's executable). This table was generated using a different script altogether that scans a particular directory recursively every evening and maintains a list of all the songs and their tags, duration, ratings and play counts and md5 hashes (I use this to determine if I have the song in the library already since I don't want to overwrite the rating or playcount data).

My goal here is to have my reloading script pull from a queue made by listeners, and in the event that queue is empty (god forbid no one listens to the brodcast ) it'll just pull a random song from the library or maybe skew said randomness by picking randomly from the more popular songs or something.
