Which protocol does icecast use for streaming? It is the real streaming and not something like "http streaming aKa progressive downloading", isn't it?

Icecast uses HTTP. This is real streaming, not "progressive downloading", as you put it.

Just to be sure that we are talking about the same thing... Icecast DOESN'T give the mp3 to the client (I can't find it in any temp folders or something), do it? I am talking about the streaming from webroot, without using any source clients.

File serving from webroot is, as the name 'webroot' suggests, just acting as a normal webserver. In this case, it isn't true streaming.

Whether a temporary file is produced depends entirely on the software you download the file with. I don't know what you mean by "Icecast DOESN'T give the mp3 to the client" - serving the entire file to the client is the entire point of the file serving capabilities in icecast.
