Icecast Streaming Media Server

Hello all,

I'm just starting out with Ices2 and am trying to stream audio directly from the ALSA output to my soundcard. I have the Icecast server set up and when I run Ices, and connect to the stream from another computer, it appears the sound is coming out of my speakers, into my microphone, then being broadcasted. I can hear background noise, the fan in my room, when I talk, etc.

Is there any way around this? Can I directly broadcast soundcard output?

yes, you need to change the settings in your mixer. The usual default is to capture from Mic but you will want something like pcm or wave or Mix. If you use Mix then make sure the Mic is muted.

Thanks karl, I messed around with my mixer settings and got that to work. Furthermore, I can mute the master volume and the audio still broadcasts! Thats good, because now I can avoid creeping out my roommates when my music starts playing randomly ....

I now have it set up so I can SSH in from work or wherever, tunnel VNC, start Amarok and Ices, and tunnel my music through SSH, using VLC for Windows as the client I like this. My music collection is now totally portable.

nice... i was doing a music-archive as well.

did you also had a look at the mpd (music player deemon)...

and there is a nice but overloaded solution with which you can stream to icecast with the mpd (in jukebox mode)
