Icecast Streaming Media Server

Hello, I have 2 questions abour falback files.

1) Can I set the fallback to an xml playlist file which will point to files hosted on the same server as icecast server?

2) On my station we have a button on front page 'tune in' which points to the stream url.
If the fallback file is playing & not the live stream will new listeners be able to hear the fallback file by clicking the 'tune in' button? Or is the fallback file only available to listeners already on the stream when it fallsback? Making the steam appear offline to new people wanting to listen by clicking the 'tune in' button.

1. no, use a source client if you want a playlist of content.

2. new listeners to inactive mountpoints but with an active fallback (file included) will get the fallback content.

ok, thanks for reply. How do I fallback to an active source? Would I need to install a source client onto my server?

You fallback to an active source just as you would to a file, just make sure your source is running at the time the fallback occurs.. You may install the source client on the server but we don't enforce that, you could install it on a machine in another country if you wish.

ok thanks. Im trying to find the cheapest way of having a fallback file. If I have another machine say at home for instance, running a source all the time & fallback to that, that will require another internet connection. Really I just want to install verything on a dedicated server & pay for that only.

Forget the playlist for a moment. Say I want to fall back to 1 file & have it repeat over & over. Sometimes we have archives on for 18 hours. If I was to get a 10 hour file & have it loop that would be same effect.

or is there a possibility of setting multiple mounts to fallback on, each one playing in turn as the previous one ends? rather than looping a 10 hour file?

Fallbacks can be chained.
I have tried /mount1 -> /mount2 -> /mount3 -> /network_playlist -> /local_playlist.
(/mountX for live dj's, /network_playlist for streaming no-speech playlists, /local_playlist for localhost streaming with Ices)

So, if no live content on /mountX, but /newtwork_playlist and /local_playlist are on, listeners will hear /network_playlist. If that one stops, listeners will hear /local_playlist, and if someone starts streaming on /mount3, listeners hear that. Then if /mount2 is connected, it will be what listeners hear etc.
First active in that chain will be the one listeners will hear.
Just remember same format and bitrate, otherwise you may have squirrels or monsters on stream

Can I install SAM broadcaster onto my server & have it play playlist? then I could fallback to that

You can use whatever client you want. On Unix systems, ices0 for mp3 or ices2 for ogg are good playlist very light clients. On windows, you could give a try to ezstream.

SAM broadcaster is good but sounds somewhat fat to me for use on a server

I dont have any experience with servers as yet.
So I can install a source client onto my server & view it as I would if it was running on my desktop?
Does ez stream support playlist? I.e I can load files into it & leave it running & view it asif it was on my desktop pc when I want to chnage the files that are in playlist?

haha yes I know how to use EZ stream, & am versed in other source clients. But I have no experience of servers, nor of installing these apps on servers, and how they are accessed once installed.

on server, create an account...
Install ezstream
upload your playlist...
then start your playlist...

sounds simple, no?
