i have icecast running and MuSE playing in dyne:bolic which is a linux live CD on a virtual machine using VMware,

every now and again, from 5 seconds to maybe 2 minutes? it starts lagging up, playing it at about half the speed all broken up. Is that a problem with the server, the player, the encoding, or the fact that its running in a virtual setting?

not enough information to say really. check the effects on other players. Some virtual server setups have been known to cause issues but try other aspects like using a player on another machine. save the stream to file and then play the file. If the player is the cause the it would probably end up being kicked off.

i tried to stream using the OGG vorbis streaming and it worked fine with no hooks but i couldnt seem to play the actual stream in any of my media players in windows. i dont really have another player to test the lame codec in though. I was trying to use DarkSnow but i have no idea how to actually play media through it given that it doesnt have a media player attached.

winamp non-lite plays vorbis content and wmp does if the correct codecs are installed. Whether there is anything wrong with the stream itself is another matter as we are unable to check it.
