Icecast Streaming Media Server

Icecast2 running in ubuntu dapper (not the crypt password version!) looks ok on the lan but refuses to connect to the Winamp (ms Vista) mp3 source. Switching Winamp over to the ogg source works fine. I have the same problem trying to connect from a linux mp3 source (sctrans). I am wondering if icecast (1) would work better. Tony Bailey

not enough info to say really. Could be a mountpoint extension confusing the players or variable bitrate for non-ogg streams, sctrans failures could be down to the lack of multiple ports defined/allowed.

Sorry, should have made it clear its not player probs but connecting the sources to the server. My experience of this is limited to shoutcast where it seems to work via 8001 in and 8000 out. I only recently found out that "mountpoints" were introduced to allow multiple streams from the single port, something not part of shoutcast. Whatever is working with the Winamp ogg source doesn't work with any of the mp3 sources, even if the source ports are changed. Regards, Tony Bailey

shoutcast streams will still work as long as you have the definitions in the xml correct. a simple <shoutcast-mount> in the listen-socket of port 8000 would suffice.

Thanks, I looked up a few references and tried shoutcast-mount in port 8001 but Winamp source failed to complete the connection. I found that shoutcast-compat worked instead.

The sctrans Linux source still fails apparently after sending a title update, I haven't been able to shed any light on that so far. Tony Bailey

in 8001 then yes shoutcast-compat would be used, however I actually said port 8000 which is a different port (the http one not the shoutcast specific port).

I cannot comment on your sctrans without specifics, iirc one of the shoutcast utilities didn't even follow the established specs.

week two update: Tried alternatives, Darkice works (mpeg not ogg as it compiled without it for some reason) but no playlist input. Ices, probs with libshout etc; Ices2 package installed but not running (ogg only). Ran winamp source and sctrans alternately and compared icecast2 error log - sctrans thinks it has logged on to the icecast server but there's no logon showing up in the icecast log. In order to run both mpeg and ogg from winamp the icecast2 config has to have one open port (8000) plus one shoutcast-compat port (8001). The shoutcast mount point is in by default. Tony Bailey

I don't have anything further to add to this topic, which started with a failed attempt to mp3 source icecast2 with sctrans (linux). A related issue is the apparent lack of alternative packages with mp3 capability. A work-round I found recently is to use sctrans to source a shoutcast server (private or public if you want yp) then add the icecast2 server configured as a shoutcast relay.
