Hi guys,
we are evaluating open source solutions for our commercial audio and video streaming. Are there any benchmarks/ reviews/white papers etc. comparing icecast with other commercial proprietary solutions with respect to quality, cost of operation, scalabilty, reliability etc. It would be great if someone could discuss with us their experiences.

We did some benchmarking just before 2.3 was released, it still applies to 2.3.1, results on http://www.icecast.org/loadtest.php

We are quite happy with Icecast. Previously, we used Shoutcast. We switched about a year ago, and our systems run 24/7 with very few problems.
You can check our our streams at wmph.org. If you are interested in deeper discussions of specifics, let me know. You can contact me through WMPH.
We currently run 2.3.0 on our production 2003 server.
