I am looking at setting up a fairly complex station, and have not really found a way to do this at all. If it requires another daemon to listen and accept connections up front to perform the mix, then sends from that source to icecast that is fine...but i am looking for a way to have multiple sources stream into a single point, be mixed and then shipped off to icecast for broadcast to clients.
i have seen some reference to this on google, but absolutey have not found a way to do it.
I was hoping something like SAM Broadcaster would let them come into my home machine, and be mixed down from there, but that does not seem to be the case.
Any suggestions on something I could do at the server to collect multiple source streams, and mix them down into a single stream on the fly for icecast?

Read documentation about fallback.
You can chain 2 mountpoints so that other has more priority, so when there starts streaming Icecast2 will switch to that automatically.
You can define for example /radio with fallback to /dj1, and /dj with fallback to /dj2.
Now you (or some other) start streaming to /dj2, listeners listen to /radio and hear /dj2. If you (or some other) starts to stream into /dj1, Icecast2 will switch to that mountpoint and listeners hanging on /radio will hear /dj1.
Simple. Also /dj2 may stream but listeners on /radio won't hear it, when /dj1 stops it will fallback to /dj2 and listeners hear it
Also, /dj2 may have defined to fallback to /playlist, and ices for example may stream some playlist there if you want 24/7 radio
Just use exactly same bitrates etc. ie. both will stream as MP3, 128kbps, 44,1kHz, dual mono (full stereo) and it should work very fine. |

yeah ive got that all working...what im looking to do, is have multiple dj's on that can talk to one another on the air...kind of like radio stations do their morning shows...but i want live
another example might be...doing interviews on the station. if i wanted someone to be able to come in, and answer questions and be interviewed, as well as take callers questions and have them answered...how would i go about doing all of that?
i need to find a way to combine realtime streams into a single stream i guess...i can see ways to do it at the source end...something using SAM, and perhaps a bluetooth cellphone to pick up audio from the person being interviewed...teamspeak or something similiar...i dunno...lol |

u can mix at the source by using traktor dj studio. all you need is a good soundcard--i personally recommend a multichannel sound blaster. when you use traktor what you can do is wire the mics in as input channels to the source client computer.
If ur gonna do sumting w/ more than one mic and you need a good soundcard as well use an M-Audio PC pre-amp. Its usb 2.0 and lets u use 2 mics as well as acts as a soundcard as well. use this w/ traktor dj studio 3.0 and config to ur liking. u can mix 4 audio streams w/ the 4 "decks" in traktor, as well as punch in as a talk channel...not to mention that its insanely awesome dj software...if u've already got the soundcard and the mic inputs u need w/ ur source client machine, then all u need to do is start usin traktor
--btw i've got traktor workin now with my server and source on the same PC (my laptop) and i'm just tryin to get a url and tweak my router so that i can get external access to the stream. (a single stream mind you =D) |

yo man just use a speakerphone and place it near the mic-a good mic'll pick it up w/ good quality (haha phones are like 8,000 Khz) and just let DJ or whoever answer as they sit on the other side of the mic. |

So DJ's are far from eachother?
Try skype or some other VOIP software.
If both are in same studio, just get some diplexer for 2 microphones to one input. You know, Y-shape thing where you can plug 2 mic and other end to for example computers soundcard mic-in. |

far away from one another
was trying to avoid too much crap streaming at one guy lol. if we have 2 dj's, and 1 call in interviewee, and we take other calls for questions...thats a lot of streaming crap at whoever hosts the conferencing part.  |

Always use the KISS principle !! Keep It Simple stupid!
It doesnt matter what u use for conferencing, skype, ventrilo, teamspeak etc.
the oddcast stand alone allows u to broadcast what u hear from the soundcard, and when the interview is over switch over to the winamp to play the music.
The stand alone oddcasts is a terrific bridge to other standalone music progs eg wmp for monkey audio, aac.
not sure about quality, will ask on their site.
Only one down side is no metadata from the music, but perfect for interviews |

well we are going to use sam broadcaster when this gets going. its pretty neat, and relatively cheap for all it does. well, ill get that for 1 or 2 dj's...the rest of them can use something like oddcast. |

I was hoping if you could explain to me how to set this up or if you could point me into a step by step process? |

this is EXACTLY what I do..
I receive DJs on a given mount on icecast.. from there I pull them down to the studio where they are mixed into the local program buss on the console, then they are sent back up to icecast to be sent to listeners.. (I could press a "red switch" and put them on FM as well)
I use dedicated streaming equipment- receivers and encoders.. I then have the logic managed at the server itself- including emergency fallback in case the studio loses net (happens too often hehe)
I can insert local programming into ANY stream and even mix in REALTIME with the incoming DJs and I can skype them back and even take calls at the same time.. all with a link latency of ZERO! (return trip server to source latency is 2 seconds)
A multi-channel soundcard is a MUST.. but I recommend an echo series or M-audio card.. stay AWAY from consumer stuff such as soundblaster or ANYthig that uses AC97 audio chipsets! (read: anything made by Realtek) and NEVER EVER use a built-in soundcard!
I also use dedicated hardware for audio processing and stream conditioning- I have multi-stream and even stream-to-stream processing that keeps the audio clean and top-notch even for the low rate (modem) mp3 streams..
logic is handled by custom code at the server end that feeds the chatroom and the players/clients, the show and stream titling, server meta updating, mode states and even DJ and album art images... and controls the "auto DJ" that switches in and out whenever a DJ logs into the input port.. all done AUTOMATICALLY- read: NO timers, admin kick-scripts, or countdowns EVER required! Logic Control Code also generates the website and all EXPORTABLE elements DYNAMICALLY- makes things efficient and even allows inporting into places such as Myspace and facebook. Exclusive "hop detector" also manages the listener counts when shifting streams- to keep the numbers correct and consistant.
sorry, I think I got a little carried away there.. hehe
I had to respond to this as it seems that someone wanted to know how I did all of this.

| Go to the SAM Broadcaster forum, and do a search for Skype and Virtual Audio Cable (VAC). There is a easy and economical way to accomplish what you want to do. I do it all the time and it took about 10 minutes to set up. |
