Icecast Streaming Media Server

Hi everybody,

I'm currently using Nicecast on a mac os x Snow Leopard system. I do get the streaming to work properly and I've had persons listening in to my streams directly onto my computer. This is however not a good solution due to BW issues.

Questions:
1. How can one get listed in the http://dir.xiph.org/index.php (stream directory)?
2. Are there any other places one can list one's radio stream?
3. Which official icecast servers are there to use to "realy" my streams and how do I get the required accound info etc for that server (I find the information on this issue rather bad and have not found any despite much time invested tryng to find the informaiton - I do know about live365)?

1. set up the directory tags and enable public or advertising on the source client. You can override the setting if the source client access is limited with the <public> setting.

2. yes, I'm sure some searches will show those up.

3. A number of streaming providers use icecast as part of their setup, you'll have to ask them about their terms and locations.

Well, I figured it must be something like that. But I can not find any such choices in Nicecast. (have you been using Nicecast yourself?)

I also figured I must get an account on http://dir.xiph.org to be able to list my streaming source in the directory but don't find any info about it.

Also, Ive tried to stream directly to the server address etc. in hoping that then the source would be listed automatically, but wont get the streaming to work as I don't know the exact address to stream to or if a U/P is needed (if this is the right method at all).

All of these uncertainties because of lack of information on the http://dir.xiph.org/index.php webpage.

Well yes, but which ones are the big ones, and is there any with a straight forward way of getting listed?

Yes I'm sure of it, but I don't seem to find them. This is the reason why I posted my question here on the forum. I know about Live365, but are there any (other) icecast servers that I can use to relay my streams, and in that case which (as I implied in my previous posting but never wrote)?

no I haven't used nicecast, but there is the <public> setting in icecast. You don't need an account for our directory, just some unique details to identify your stream. There is very little to setup to do in icecast, just the directory tags and maybe the public flag, both of which are specified in the documents provided.

we have a big listing, but there is also radiotoolbox and a few other smaller ones, I haven't looked specifically because ours is dir.xiph.org. Getting listed is straightforward but maybe you should look at your log files to see if there are any problems (hint look for lines with yp in them).

There are plenty of hosting companies for streaming, a very basic search on google for "icecast stream hosting" would of shown a few possibilities.
