Hi,
I'm trying to set up a streaming station with Icecast. The thing is, myself and a few friends want to stream at different (fixed) times. What I'd like to be able to do is tell Icecast "X's show is over, switch over to Y" and then allow Y's source stream to get fed to whoever's listening. Basically a "DJ switcher" thing. But I want to do that without the listeners' connections dropping - the switchover should be pretty much seamless.

Can Icecast do this? If so, how do I need to set it up?

Yo I'm in the same boat. I don't think there is a solution coded already. I think you will just have to coordinate the takeover of the stream via AIM or something.

I don't even think there is a way to have different login passwds for servers although I know they coded a way for users to login so it might be possible for someone to come up with this.

switchover handling is the awkward bit currently. It's a question of what does the listener receive in between the shows. One way is to have a fallback mount (eg /default.ogg) which is an ezstream/ices feed of playlist files. Have each show on their own mountpoint with fallback (override enabled) to /default.ogg, then define a relay of say /live.ogg to stream /default.ogg. A show that connects will move the relay from /default to itself and back when it's finished

Shoutcast has a nice setting for that

AutoDumpUsers=0

it gives you about a minute to take over with another stream, it also has it's flaws... tho most of the time it works nice.

I also like to know if Icecast can do this. connecting 2 cources at once is kinda dangerous. Some DJ's manage to get connected to the stream without knowing... realy... Smile

So what you'd have is something like:

The sequence would be:
1) First DJ connects
2) First DJ's show ends, so he disconnects
3) Fallback enables, "bumper" tracks start playing
4) Second DJ connects
5) Cycle repeats

What I would like to do is have the "bumper" tracks (basically the station ident) play from the beginning for each user that's connected... I suppose that would be best done by lining everything up offline, then creating a 10-minute (or so) ogg and feeding that to Icecast via the <intro> option.

It could be possible to use the intro option for this, the 2 issues that could be a problem are

intro is not played midstream (actually this can be made to work easily enough)

intro file is not regulated speed wise so can be an issue if the listener allows an increase in bandwidth (eg relay).
