As a user of Icecast I am looking for an audio player playing Ogg Vorbis live streams on my website.

This request is not new of course, but I wonder if there is a 2010 state-of-the-art player which is not based on Flash or Java? Because I’ve always avoided to make use of either of them (Flash/Java) for my website.

Which options are there many years after the releases of JOrbis, Cortado and all those little Flash player projects popping up now and then?

Best regards,

Alex

The various big commercial players have done as much as they can to make sure there is no easy way to proceed on this, usually for their own invested interests. A number of browsers are starting to handle vorbis audio natively.

So I guess there is no way round a Flash player if my Ogg Vorbis stream should reach as large an audience as possible. My website access statistics say that more than 90% of the browsers used have a Flash plugin. iPhones do not have Flash support for obvious reasons.

There are apps that can be used but the likes of Apple, Microsoft and Adobe have tried to make sure no one solution (especially web embedded) is easy. The audio tag in HTML5 is an example of getting things to work but look at the problems being thrown there. Best thing to do is to provide a few possibilities, eg ffmp3 for flash, cortado or similar for java, an m3u link for the likes of vlc/winamp/realplayer

I do have flash here but I rarely allow it to be used
