Hello.

I am the web director at a college radio station in Portland. I am currently trying to ramp up our online listener capacity. We currently operated online with a solid Debian server connected via ssh to an university Dell box running Ubuntu inside the radio station. I am using Darkice and Icecast on the Ubuntu box, and while Icecast is installed on the main Debian server, I am only ssh port forwarding from the Ubuntu box on site.

The university just dropped off two more generic Dell boxes last week, and they have Ubuntu, Darkice, and Icecast installed.

**The boxes inside the station sit behind the university's firewall. Anything we do has to pass thru the firewall like the ssh port forwarding **

Questions:

1) What is the best way to configure the 3 Ubuntu boxes to the main Debian server?
2) I seem to be confused by different terminology. Should I be using 'Mounting' the Ubuntu boxes on the main server or setting up a Master-slave relationship? Which is master and which is slave? I would guess the Ubuntu boxes are source servers? Or at least creating a back-up unit??? How do I manage the listeners on those 3 boxes?
3) What is the best way to test our streams insuring stability and max listenership?

Thank You.[/i]

From your description, just set up the new machines as slave icecasts to the current one. It's unclear if there is any difference in the network set up for these different machines but assuming all are equal then list the master as the last in the playlists that you send out if you don't do DNS roundrobin. Use the mount option max-listeners setting if you wish to limit bandwidth on a particular machine.
