Hi Guys

Just getting started with icecast love it all setup but i seem to be hitting a issue.

Every Application ive tried Virtual Dj and Traktor Dj all tend to broadcast in ogg format.

This works fine in my browser and on my android phone but ios doesn't support streaming in ogg so it doesn't work ini my ipad and iphone! so mp3 would be the preferred format, but traktor dj and virtual dj dont support this.

I found BUTT which works and broadcasts in mp3 which works on all devices great but it doesn't link into my dj ing packages.

I guess what i am asking is

Can icecast server take the broadcasted application/ogg format and covert it into mp3 format on the server and output the mp3 format for the listener url.

If not i would love some advice on the best way to get around my issue.

Thanks

no. icecast itself does not transcode. Especially considering codecs like mp3 need to be licensed. Usually those sorts of tasks are best served by an external application.

Hi Karl

Thanks for the reply

So say i have a radio station that is looking to broadcast their audio content out but it needs to be compatible with all mobile devices.

And their software only broadcasts in application/ogg format.

What is the best solution to go for to avoid licensing.

Or what processes would i go through to get a mp3 license and setup transcoding???

Any advice would be good

best is a very subjective term. obviously mp3 is the most supported on the listener side of things however you will need to find appropriate encoding software for your setup and then it is a question of if mp3 is good enough quality for you for the bitrate. Using ices0 or VLC may be enough to try things out, but the codec licensing side of things is outside the scope here, others may wish to add to discussion.

Generally speaking, transcoding adds quality issues although if you go from a high bitrate source to a low bitrate stream then transcoding issues are minimal. Hopefully opus will get more of a foothold.
