hello all.

I want to broadcast to my LAN music from http://www.di.fm (for example). I have a FreeBSD machine. It would be very nice if you explain to me what software I need for this and with what configuration.

thx in advance.

quite simple really, use icecast with a series of <relay> definitions. With 2.3 you can set any or all as on-demand.

The example XML files show exactly how relays are defined and the docs explain the settings, just look for <relay>, you'll see at least server, port, mount and localmount. The pls file will contain those details although the mountpoint may be be missing in which case use / as the mount value. The asx link won't be any use as that is for a WMA stream.

why are you trying to relay a pls file, you are meant to relay the stream that the pls file refers to

"curl http://www.di.fm/mp3/classictechno.pls" tells me that the link is actually http://205.188.215.225:8004 so the server and port are those, the mount is /, localmount can be anything you want eg /trance.mp3.

BTW relay-shoutcast-metadata is on by default so you don't need to state it but IIRC some of the DI servers require the request enabled or else it returns a 404, and I don't know the reason for that either.

I got it working, a BIG thx to you karlH.

but I have one more problem then I access the link at di.fm it auto loads in winamp (in IE) ... but then i access my link (from my server) it starts to download it.

what can be the problem ?

realy config :

Code:

<relay>
  <server>207.200.96.229</server>
  <port>8030</port>
  <mount>/</mount>
  <local-mount>/drumandbass</local-mount>
</relay>

probably because you are referrring to the stream in your browser, so you browser is trying to download it. The link to use

http://<yourserver>:<port>/drumandbass.m3u

The m3u playlist is automatically created, sent to the browser and the browser should then kick off a player.

it works thx for your help.

p.s could you give me a TIP how to lower bitrate, for example I have a mount that has 128 bitrate can I lower it some how 96 kbps ? My users have overall bandwidth 128 kbps and they can't listen to 128 kbps.

For mp3 you are going to be very limited, you might push it down to 96k but it will sound worse, the only other way is to reduced either samplerate or channels or both. If you go for a Vorbis stream then it will sound far better even at 64k

I've gotten a lot of useful information from this thread about mirroring an existing thread. One question that comes up: If the source server goes down, will my icecast session keep trying to reconnect to the stream server, will it die, will it sit idly doing nothing? Is there a parameter in icecast.xml that should be set to attempt to reconnect if the connection is dropped?

Thanks in advance!

If the source of the relay stops then current listeners will either be dropped or passed to a fallback, but icecast will attempt to reconnect to the relay every <master-update-interval> seconds (default 120).

Check the docs or examples, you'll see that it is neither.
