I have no clue how to access administrator for icecast2 on a linux server.

I don't use telnet anymore is there a way to access via SSH?

I'm a newbie please be kind.

Do you mean just viewing the admin section? Or actually editing the icecast.xml configuration files and such on the server?

To access the admin section, go to:
yourhost.com:8000/admin

It'll ask for your login information and you should be all set.

There are commands you can run like 'dir', 'dump', 'kick', etc.

That is the admin I'm trying to access, NOT the one at mydomain:8000/admin

The user's guide says to access it via telnet but I haven't used telnet for years, only SSH. So I'm trying to figure out how to access this via SSH.

thx,

Just to get into your server? SSH should be fine. :/ I'm not understanding what you want, I don't think.

It sounds like maybe you're thinking of an Icecast shell(?) which as far as I know doesn't exist. From ssh you can use "icecast2" to start the server and edit settings, then in the web admin page you can kick users, list mountpoints, etc.

Edit: also, why is there such a long timeout on editing posts? This sucks.

Can you give me a link to where it is you're seeing this stuff about telnet? I haven't read all the documentation. Also, what OS are you using? It's pretty easy to get telnet running on most Linux distros. SSH is a specific protocol though, so you can't access a server expecting telnet/something else with SSH.

I guess this is some previous version guide or something,

I found the guide here...
http://www.rsmas.miami.edu/~angel/web/icecast.html#admin_commands

So forgive a stupid question but how do I restart gracefully if I change something since there is no command for that?

thx,

I just set up icecast2 and I didn't see anything like what you linked me. Did you install icecast1.3 or whichever version that is for some reason? And just a guess, but a "graceful restart" would probably be /etc/init.d/icecast reload but I don't know for sure

No problem. I'll do what I can, but you might want to wait till someone with a little more experience weighs in too - I've only ever worked with icecast2, and not even very much.

I am on Icecast2 and I reloaded the way you said and that seemed to work.

I am now trying to get listed on yp.shoutcast.com

Cool. I can't help you with getting listed, but if you've got any other questions about icecast2 administration in general I'll do what I can to help you.

icecast won't list on the shoutcast directory as the protocol is different and undocumented. They also don't want non-shoutcast servers listed there, banning servers that are not shoutcast.
