Icecast Streaming Media Server

I have done some research and see similar issues to what I am experiencing but I have yet to find an actual solution.

The problem I am experiencing occurs after any client connects to the Icecast stream. I am using mpd on a remote box and Rhythmbox music player on the localhost and both clients do the same thing. If the clients connect while a ogg is being streamed everything is golden, but at the end of the song/file both mpd and Rhythmbox disconnect and I have to reconnect both clients to continue on to the next song being streamed.

Being a newbie to icecast and ices I am not sure if I am interpreting the debug logs correctly, but from what I can gather it looks like the stream is being torn down between each song and a new one is created for the next song. I am not sure if this is a result of icecast or ices, since both have entries in the log files that make it appear there is a tear down/new stream instance happening on both sides.

If someone that is better at deciphering the logs could tell me what it looks like is happening I would appreciate it:

while you have 1 warning in the ices log about a failed entry, the rest looks ok. The listening clients seems to be closing the connection, try with vlc, mplayer and ogg123.

I will try the other clients for sanity checks, but I am sort of stuck using mpd as a client, so I am hoping to resolve this issue and still use mpd.

The reason I am stuck using mpd is because I have it installed on a modified WLAN router running OpenWRT with support for USB audio so it is functioning as a streaming audio client for a distributed audio system I am trying to create. I have the setup working with Internet radio stations like Soma.fm, the issue only occurs with my own icecast server.

If I play a long ogg file the client stays connected the entire length of the song, the client has no idea how long the stream is, so why would the client disconnect at the very end of the song and not some random point during the stream? I think this is why I have been suspecting a configuration issue with either icecast or ices, since two clients have the same issue, but maybe one of the clients you suggested will have different results.

Is there a similar sized and functionally capable media play like mpd that should work with icecast as a cllent and not have this issue?

I've tried Rhythmbox here and that has trouble with header updates, so send a message to those developers because they seem to have broken their chain handling. This may be the same thing affecting mpd but I cannot verify that. Another way to test is to join 2+ ogg files (eg cat *.ogg > test.ogg), try to play the resulting file.

Looks like the issue is with the version of mpd I am using as the stream client and its support for ogg vorbis file headers. I decided to give ices0.4 a try which supports streaming of mp3 files and the issue went away.

For what I need at the moment using ices0.4, and streaming mp3 files will work.
