Okay!

me again... I have a NEW animal to report and explain...

I have recently gotten myself a new host, which on said host, I have a dedicated box..

dedicated box is a dual core xeon with 4 gigs ram and 500 gigs dosk.. yadda yadda yadda .. its running Linux Debian "squeeze"...

my old host was a Verio VPS running FBSD 6.3 and I wasn't root there, only a user.. I know very little more about this vbox...

heres the problem!

I have a standalone hardware encoder feeding the Icecast server through libshout.. (as I mentioned in an earlier post) and I have noticed that the audio on the NEW dedicated box is "flattened" and less-dynamically apparent.. (even DISTORTED in some aspects) so I then set up a dual feed from the encoder to BOTH, the old and new server and simultaniously feed both servers..

the old server has a much fuller and richer (and less distorted) sound than the new box! the new box sounds "over-driven" and distorted.. mind you, they are both fed fro the exact same source!

I have had listeners tune in to both and many also hear the difference (I asked them "which one sounds better?" the listeners who heard the difference picked the OLD box over the new one

as far as Icecast itself is concerned, the only difference is, is the old server is running Icecast "trunk" whereas the new one is running the latest ver which I downloaded from the front page of this site.

this one sorta has me baffled!

unless there is data loss then I don't see why the different versions would matter. If you have a dual stream, then downloading both to local files (without any metadata) should show identical files (assuming the start is aligned up). I suppose it's possible that players could trigger dynamic resampling giving the appearance of a different sound and that could be triggered from say larger burst sizes or quicker responses.

nod nod...

very interesting reply..

the players are identical, opened on the same [receiving] machine

all other settings and configs are identical.. (in fact, I used the exact same config file on the new box, though I did recompile a new icecast since its a 64-bit system while the old one is 32-bit)

but there is a distinctive difference, nonetheless..

That doesn't really help resolve the issue. Is there a stream difference or not? If I take a curl dump from one stream and a curl dump from the other at the same time, where each one is from the same source source with the exact same encoder settings then I would expect those files to have the same content. They should even play in the same way from each dumped file.
