ok. . . here my problem,

i dont have enough DJs to get a 24 hour stream, so i thought i would use icecast to have a fallback. I would like to store 1GB of music on a web server somewhere, and then have the fallback stage playing the music there, now, i believe this can be done using 2 mountpoints for example

/live
/fallback

and have /live fallback to /fallback

and to get the music playing on /fallback use ICES, am i right?

i have tried setting this up locally to test but it doesnt fallback, when /live is dropped i dont hear anything, or it loops, i would be streaming in .mp3PRO

Many thanks in advance,
Mick

ices is one such source client that could be used for the fallback. As long as the format of the fallback matches the original stream then it will work. Mixing an mp3pro fallback with an mp3 stream is not something I've tried, so you need to determine if it is a player issue or not.

I'm guessing that's not going to work as they use a different decoder, no?

Maybe not, mp3pro is supposed to follow mp3 specs AFAIK so it should be compatible, but as you say, a different decoder may be required for the playback for it to be worthwhile.

when i tested it locally, i had 2 streams running, and they were exactly the same, just differnt music, both streaming at 64kbps, encoding MP3PRO, so i dont know why it didnt work

Just to revive this one...

I am using mp3 pro for a low fi version of my stream 56kbs mono. I can't seem to make the fallback work with a 56kbs mono lame mp3.

I don't know how or where to create an mp3 pro file.

So far I have tried...

1. Creating a dummy encoder in SAM Broadcaster, set to the same specs streaming silence, and archiving it. This just produces a 0kb file.
2. Grabbing the dll from SAM and dropping it in Audacity (can't find a dll, just a .drv, which doesn't ork)

Any ideas?

OK, turns out I had...

<fallback-mount>loading.mp3</fallback-mount>

Instead of...

<fallback-mount>/loading.mp3</fallback-mount>

Oddly enough, my 56kbs mp3pro falls back to my 64kbs lame test tone:) when playing in VLC.

I'm aligning it to be sure though.

For those that might want to know I'm using mp3pro purely because I think it sounds better at lower bitrates. Thinner sound, but less artifacts and antialiasing (think that's the right word... washy silabants anyway).

Andalso, #1 above wasn't creating a file via SAM, because I think it has smarts built in to not archive any silence. I was able to produce a file when music was playing.
