|
|
I have installed the Oddcast plugin for Winamp on a Windows 98 SE and Windows ME client. I try to connect to my Icecast server from these two and neither one will connect. If I go over to my XP machine, it will broadcast just fine to the Icecast server.
The Icecast server is currently installed on the Windows 98 SE machine. Any thoughts on why I can't get the Windows 98 Se or the Windows ME machine to broadcast to the Icecast server?
BTW, both of these systems were previously being used to broadcast to a Shoutcast server, which worked just fine. |

Also might need network info--are you connecting to your Icecast server via the Internet or on a local network?
If a local network, is it a Windows 2000, XP, or 2003 network? |

The error message I get using Oddcast plugin with Winamp is that it is "Unable to connect to socket." I checked the Icecast Server error log and there is no errors showing in the log file.
We are a corporate network running Windows 2000 and 2003 servers. The Icecast server is presently installed on a Windows 98 SE machine. It also has Shoutcast on this computer, although it is not presently loaded or running. We were using Shoutcast on it to begin with. We have since installed Icecast.
The broadcast computers are Windows 98 SE and also a Windows ME computer. Neither one will connect to Icecast server using Oddcast plugin for Winamp. Again the message is, "Unable to connect to socket." We can shut down Icecast and startup Shoutcast and these machines connect just fine to the Shoutcast server.
We have in another building Windows XP and Windows 2000 clients that can broadcast with no problem to the Icecast server using the Oddcast plugin for Winamp.
Again, there are no log errors in the Icecast server error log. Only message I am getting is Oddcast telling me "Unable to connect to socket." |

I am still unable to broadcast to the Icecast server from the Windows 98 workstation that is running Winamp with Oddcast plugin. I have never been able to get any Windows 98 or ME workstation to connect to Icecast, but these same broadcast machines can connect to Shoutcast server.
Any more thoughts on how to proceed to solve this problem? |

We don't have access to your machines to know the exact details. For instance is icecast using the same port(s) as the shoutcast one does, are you connecting in shoutcast or icecast2 mode. The message you are reporting just means a connection could not be established which may very well mean that you have the wrong port defined.

Forgive the long reply, but here goes....
I am using Winamp with Oddcast V3 on a Windows 98 SE workstation to broadcast to the Icecast 2 server which is also on a Windows 98 SE computer.
I have checked and rechecked the settings on the broadcasting computer. Everything appears correct. I do have another computer in a different building that we use at times to broadcast the the Icecast 2 server on the Windows 98 SE machine. This computer has Windows XP Pro on it. Just like the Windows 98 SE workstation, I have Winamp with Oddcast on it, with the same settings (I have compared them both). The Windows XP workstation has no problem broadcasting to the Icecast 2.
As for Shoutcast, we do not have it running any longer on the computer with Icecast 2. Only Icecast is up and running. However, if I shutdown Icecast and start Shoutcast, the Windows 98 workstation is able to broadcast to that computer. In this case, I just use the Shoutcast DSP plugin instead of Oddcast plugin.
So, I am not really sure where the problem lies other than the fact that if I use Winamp with the Oddcast plugin on the Windows 98 workstation, it will not connect to Icecast. It will only connect if I run Shoutcast server on that computer instead of Icecast. But all Windows XP machines can broadcast to the Icecast server using Winamp with Oddcast.
Perhaps you can make some sense out of the lengthy reply. |

While a general description is fine, what you need to be clear on is what you are asking those apps to do and in what way they try to achieve it. The shoutcast protocol is different from the icecast one, as shoutcast uses 2 ports whereas icecast2 uses 1 unless you have the compatability set in the icecast xml.
We can only speculate on the possible causes, but are you trying to connect to icecast2 as a shoutcast style source client? do you see the web page in a browser even if the source client doesn't connect?

No, I am not trying to connect to icecase2 as a shoutcast style source client.
If I point my browser to http://192.168.0.31:8000/, I see the Icecast2 server is running, but source clients are currently connected.
I originally thought that perhaps the Windows 98 workstation I am using to broadcast to icecast2 with was having a network issue....and perhaps it is. However, this same workstation use to broadcast to the shoutcast server. Nothing has changed as far as I know, except instead of running shoutcast server, I installed icecast2 and removed shoutcast.
On the Windows 98 workstation broadcast computer I proceeded to install Oddcast plugin and set it to the same settings I have set on a Windows XP workstation elsewhere. As far as I can see, the settings are exactly the same, and using the exact same version of software. The only difference is the os.
After I could not get it to work, I shut down the icecast2 server and began shoutcast server and the workstation was able to connect to it.
So, I don't see what the problem is with this workstation since I am implemently the exact same configuration as I am using elsewhere on an XP workstation.
Presently, the icecast2 server is running, and I can see it is up by pointing my web browser to it. However, no source clients are currently connected to it.
Perhaps I might try installing icecast2 on another computer and broadcast to it to see if it will work. Perhaps there is some issue with the computer it is running on now. However, this computer is working just fine if I broadcast to it from an XP workstation...just not any Win 9x systems. |

There must be something missing in your query. If the web page is accessible then the server is listening on that port, so you must have configured or using oddcast incorrectly.
