We're going to be serving in the neighborhood of 1000 unique streams of Ogg Vorbis-encoded audio using icecast2.3 and IceS 2. We'd obviously like to keep hardware costs to a minimum. Does anyone have recommendations or good/bad experiences to share about running icecast and IceS on various flavors of Linux? Do some offer better or worse performance than others? Are some better supported by icecast developers or easier to maintain and configure? Does it make any difference at all?

I just use CentOS 3 and 4 to broadcast. And it have been a very pleasant experience.

It is just a matter of rebuilding (rpmbuild --rebuild icecast*.rpm) the rpm and it works after configuring icecast.xml

BTW, I guess in other distros it will work perfectly as well. icecast just uses network resources and some CPU, but they dont heavily relay in any distro, so, use the one you are used to.
