I would like to know if it's possible to transmit to a mount at 64kbps mono (mp3) and automatically convert it to a second mont, transmiting at 24kbps

not possible with icecast alone.

1. you can broadcast two separate bitrates from your source client (not feasible for some folks with a low bandwidth source)

or

2. use stream transcoder:

you will need to look into using streamtranscoder (www.oddsock.org) to listen to the first stream, transcode it (to a lower bitrate), then re-broadcast it to another mountpoint or server
be warned that getting this up and running can be somewhat complex.

I am running a poll on "should icecast have stream transcoding capabilities built-in?" over in the Feature Request forum. I'd recommend voting on it.

Some are opposed to putting it in, although I'm not sure why, and nobody can seem to give me a good reasoning for this position.

however, as karl points out, there is some hope that icecast 2.3 might have script start/stop triggers that would control streamtranscoder more elegantly (which would eliminate the need for built-in functionality)

two points for me...
1. In general, we try to make the server work the same way for all streams and while vorbis could be transcoded internally, the likes of aac/mp3/nsv is not really possible for us.
2. seperating the transcoding app into a separate process means that the admin can choose to run it on the same machine or off load it onto another, afterall transcoding is much heavier on CPU

not to beat a dead horse...
looks like ffmpeg can handle streaming from/to stdin/stdout, and handle several different formats...

nice article in Linux Journal about it (although in the context of video stream format conversion)..

The idea should be the same.. take a high bitrate mp3/ogg and transcode and stream a second lower bitrate mp3/ogg stream back to itself on another mountpoint designated for the lower bitrate stream....

maybe some adventureous code warriors can revisit this?? !

CHALLENGE:

I'll donate $25 to xiph.org if somebody can come up with a nice working solution with the stream start/stop events and a transcoder, etc..
